SIDEWALK CHALK

Sidewalk chalk is a staple of childhood in the Shafer house – along with bubbles, slip-n-slides, and water guns. Our driveway is often covered with graffiti: aliens with fourteen eyes, giant scary spiders, kick-ass rainbows. Every single one of us becomes a Klimt, a Van Gogh, an Escher, a Michelangelo, when we’re squatted on the ground with a fat piece of chalk between our chubby little fingers.

But holy cow, guys. Some folks have taken this childhood art-form to a whole ‘nother level. And it is oh, so good.

Any childhood activities you’ve seen translated into grown-up fabulousness that have made you stop and stare in wonder? Share ‘em here!

Big grins,

Myn

  1. I love seeing those amazing chalk drawings. I also makes me think of those sand castle competitions where people make things with sand I didn’t even think was possible with real houses.

  2. I love elaborate chalk drawings, and this video had some new ones I hadn’t seen. What really gets me is that they expend all this time and talent and it gets washed away when it rains!

  3. Ooh, I also love when an email circulates with pictures of sidewalk chalk. It’s SO amazing. I can’t believe all the effort and artistic talent that goes into each piece only to be ‘rained’ away whenever Mother Nature deems it’s time. That element of this art form makes it all the more mysterious to me.

  4. Those are so awesome! I’m amazed by what people can do with legos too. I was in the lego store the other day and fascinated by the towns, people etc that are created. Love when childhood imagination spill over into the adult world:)

  5. This really looks awesome. I’ve seen an amazing pavement art in the past during various festivities in the city but I’ve never tried it myself (excluding my childhood days of course). My kids have a huge selection of color chalk – I know what I will be doing this summer with them :-) It might be a great time to expand my art horizons (I’m “just” a watercolor painter).

  6. Wow, I wouldn’t even believe some of those are just chalk drawings! I wonder how the artists feel about their washing away when it rains. You’re right though, sidewalk chalk is a house essential.

  7. Love this! We have tons of chalk in our house, too. We have a sports court in our backyard that’s basically a huge slab of concrete that we use for everything besides the tennis/badminton/volleyball it was made for. At any given time there will be loads of chalk drawings, but nothing as amazing as that video.

In September, Carlsbad has an ‘Art Walk’ to raise money for art in our schools and we have people come in who can do this. I’ve watched them before and STILL don’t know how they do it. It’s simply breathtaking and amazing. That gives me an idea ~ this year I’ll take pics and share them on my blog.
